Employment Academy

BB Employment Academy

The Academy provides refugees with paid placements with London employers. We work with both employers and applicants to find a match that will be of equal benefit to both. Alongside the placement, participants receive confidence-building, cultural understanding and skills-based training. This holistic approach gives the refugees the best possible preparation for going on to find permanent jobs.

What our clients & corporate partners say about the Employment Academy...

Heidi Newbigging

CSR Manager | Mayer Brown

“When the refugee crisis hit the world’s press we wanted to respond but we wanted to give the right thing that was really needed. Breaking Barriers helped us to do this. We now provide employability skills courses for refugees helping those who have arrived in the UK to navigate the job market and secure employment using the many skills that they have. It has been a deeply rewarding programme for our staff and we are constantly astounded at the wealth of knowledge and skills that the refugees have and hope that sharing our skills and experience helps them into jobs where all their talents are recognised and utilised.”

Ella Blakesley

Corporate Responsibility Manager | Ashurst

"I was first introduced to Breaking Barriers at a CSR conference and was saddened to learn of the high levels of unemployment amongst refugee communities and the challenges that often highly skilled refugees face in finding meaningful employment in the UK. Our Corporate Responsibility programme aims to support marginalised and disadvantaged communities through employee volunteering and the sharing of our staff's skills and experiences. Partnering with Breaking Barriers was a perfect fit for us and we have now run several skills based workshops in our London office, which Breaking Barriers’ clients and our volunteers have found mutually beneficial."

Tom Greenwood

Managing Director | Wholegrain Digital

"I came across the articles in Positive News which accompanied your gallery exhibition at the Proud Archivist. As I started to do my research into the company I thought this makes a lot of sense. In reality the process has been extremely straightforward. I had assumed it would be a really complicated process, I had assumed there would be a lot of paperwork and bureaucracy. What makes Breaking Barriers different from a recruitment agency is that the charity has the client in mind. You are motivated by getting people into the right place because that will give them beneficial opportunities for the future. You’re interested in making sure these people have a long-term future so you can see you want to make the right match and from a business point of view this is extremely refreshing."
