I would like to start by saying that I hope you are all well and healthy during these challenging times. Since I last updated you on Breaking Barriers’ response to the Coronavirus, a huge amount has changed for us all, both personally and professionally. This crisis has affected everyone and, of course, at Breaking Barriers, we are no different.
As I am sure you are aware, at the end of March the Chancellor announced a number of measures to support businesses, including the Job Retention Scheme. We decided to make use of this Scheme and furloughed a number of our staff, resulting in the temporary suspension of our services.
While this was a heart-breaking decision to make, it was a necessary one for us to protect the long-term interests of those from a refugee background and the future of Breaking Barriers’ ability to support them.
We firmly believe that our services will be needed more than ever as we emerge from this crisis. With high levels of unemployment expected, it is important that we support – as well as advocate for – the refugee community in what will be a crowded labour market.
Over the last six weeks, we have been working extremely hard to manage our way through this crisis and develop a plan for how we respond. We have been adapting our services to enable them to be delivered remotely, and engaging the refugee community to ask them what support they need through these difficult times.
We have been in constant contact with our supporters, donors and corporate partners and continue to be overwhelmed by your thoughtfulness, understanding and generosity. Thank you for your ongoing support and we look forward to continuing to work with you in the coming months and beyond.
As always, we will continue to share our plans and any updates with you regularly. It is our aim to get our services back up and running as soon as possible and I hope to have some exciting news to share with you on that front in the not-too-distant.
Thanks again for all of your support.
