The Charity

Founded in 2015, Breaking Barriers is a fast-paced, start-up charity with a mission to help refugees in London gain the knowledge, confidence and experience to secure stable and fulfilling employment in their new home.

We offer effective and flexible employment support in direct partnership with businesses that help refugees secure work, progress into better jobs, and successfully integrate into UK society. We have a unique approach, working with corporate partners to help refugees develop careers that match their skills, experience and aspirations.

Since Breaking Barriers’ inception just four years ago, we have grown to support in excess of 500 refugees per year and have ambitious plans to expand this as part of our strategic plan. We concentrate on getting things done in a flexible environment where everyone is encouraged to take ownership and contribute.

We are a team of over 20 employees supported by several hundred volunteers, who are all driven and committed to helping London’s refugee community.  We are looking for similarly driven and ambitious individuals keen to join an enterprising organisation where they can benefit from the opportunity to innovate and shape the direction of the charity. Colleagues who thrive are passionate, driven and have the confidence to work autonomously while remaining team players and sharing credit with all involved.

We are looking for someone who lives and breathes our values:

  • Mission-led: our clients come before everything else.
  • Welcoming: we want all people to feel happy, comfortable and secure with us.
  • Collaborative: we are supportive and considerate, curiously exploring other viewpoints to find solutions.
  • Enterprising: we are discerningly bold, entrepreneurial and have the courage to give things a go.

Job Description

This is an exciting and varied role leading our Futures programme for young refugee clients. In this role you will:

  • Build and develop your project management skills, with opportunities to contribute to programme design.
  • Provide 1:1 advice and guidance to our clients, supporting them to fulfil their potential and achieve outcomes.
  • Contribute to one of our key corporate partnerships, learning first-hand how we involve businesses in finding employment solutions for refugees in the UK.

Role Overview

You will take responsibility for delivering our Futures programme which supports younger clients aged 18-25 to achieve their goals through entering higher education, training or employment. You will lead the implementation of operational plan for the Futures programme in 2020. This includes workshops, events, targeted outreach and a mentorship programme run in partnership with one of our key corporate partners. You will play a key role during this exciting stage of the programme’s development as we scope out options for developing and expanding the programme beyond 2020.

In addition to programme work, you will have your own caseload and be involved in assessing the opportunities available to clients, helping them set goals and draw up support plans to get them into employment, training or education. You will deliver support in person and through volunteers and work with other Senior/Employment and Integration Advisers (S/EIAs) to ensure that the logistical processes of our delivery centres and programmes run smoothly and effectively.

You must have previous experience of supporting either people from refugee backgrounds, people from other marginalised backgrounds, or NEETs (not in Education, Employment or Training). You will demonstrate strong project and/or programme management skills, particularly co-ordinating and delivering educational or employment-related events or workshops. You must be fluent in English, and have a strong proficiency in one of our target languages (Arabic, Tigrinya, Amharic, Dari, Farsi, Pashto, Kurdish or Somali). You need to demonstrate how you have gone the extra mile to support clients, demonstrating a creative and innovative approach where clients aren’t progressing as hoped. Lived experience would be helpful but is not essential. Previous experience of working with corporate or business partners is also desirable but not necessary.

  • Work with clients to set goals, monitor progression towards goals and provide monthly updates on progress and agreed actions.

3. Ensure effective reporting, data management and monitoring and evaluation

  • Produce regular reporting on Futures progress and targets for Programme Coordinators, Senior Leadership Team and external partners.
  • Ensure effective monitoring and evaluation of the Futures programme through the tracking of clients, implementation of assessments, and analysis of results.
