Since our inception in 2015, we have been working tirelessly to create education, training, and employment opportunities for people of refugee background. After nearly 6 years of over 1200 clients, and over 20 partnerships and many hours of workshops and employment and education support we are extremely proud to announce that our work has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Promoting Opportunity through Social Mobility category.

The Queen’s Award is an incredibly prestigious prize and will hopefully bring Breaking Barriers increased recognition and acknowledgement of the importance of our mission. Our CEO and founder of Breaking Barriers Matthew Powell said:

“Breaking Barriers are beyond thrilled to be receiving a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the promoting opportunity category. We’re grateful to the committee for believing in our work and our mission, especially as the news comes at a challenging time for refugees as they’re disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. The prestige of the award will hopefully bring many more opportunities for us to work collaboratively with other organisations in the pursuit of more meaningful and sustainable job opportunities for refugees and people of refugee background.”

We’d like to take the opportunity to thank the volunteers, supporters, donors, and partners who have been with us along the journey and contributed to our success.

“Mayer Brown is thrilled that Breaking Barriers has won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise. It is a tremendous achievement to win this most prestigious award and we want to congratulate CEO Matthew Powell and the entire Breaking Barriers team, who work tirelessly to provide solutions to the unique challenges that refugees face when seeking employment and integrating into society. We are very proud of our association with Breaking Barriers and to have partnered with them since 2016 in some of their projects. We congratulate them on their achievements and ongoing success “ Jim Oulton, Partner at Mayer Brown International LLP.

“This award is much deserved as Breaking Barriers is unwavering in their determination to support refugees into employment and at Grant Thornton, we are proud to have played our part. Through skills development and mentoring we have seen the confidence levels in individuals soar giving them the boost needed to take those next steps in their career journey” Karen Higgins, Head of Sustainability at Grant Thornton UK

And last but not least, we want to thank our amazing clients who work incredibly hard to meet their long-term career goals and aspirations. The Queen’s Award is a huge honour, and we hope to use it to reach and support more refugees and people of refugee background in the next five years.
