There are lots of fun ways to help refugees by fundraising in your community. You can get involved as an individual, with friends or family, or even with a faith group, club or society.

This page contains lots of ideas to get you started – but we’d love to hear what you have planned. Check out our tips for fundraising success, and see how to donate the funds you raise.

Food for thought

Any opportunity to eat is a great way to get a community together.

Could you organise a bake sale, afternoon tea or summer barbeque? Or, if you're an enthusiastic cook or baker, why not run a masterclass in person or on Zoom?

Swapping favourite recipes for donations is also a fun online option. And for communities, clubs or societies who get together in person, a 'guess the weight of the cake' competition can be a simple, tasty fundraiser.

On the flip side, you could even get sponsored to give up your favourite food for a month!

Fun and games

Lots of people love a quiz! Organise yours at a club or community event, or stage it online with those who can't get together in person. Alternatively, print out your quiz and ask for donations in exchange for a copy to take away.

Bingo tournaments, board games nights, murder mysteries and escape rooms are also all great activities for fundraising in-person on on zoom. And video game challenges are perfect for long-distance fundraising.

Alternatively, if you'd like to get your gang active, why not organise a pool, table tennis or table football night? Or, for outdoor adventures, try a treasure hunt, easter egg quest, or a sporty competition.

Skills and sales

Whether you're a whizz at knitting, an enthusiastic painter, or a green-fingered gardener, your talent can help refugees. You could hold an auction for a one-off work, sell your creations at a local event, or pop an honesty box outside your house.

But you don't need to be creative to hold a fundraising sale. Could your club or society organise a jumble, car boot or auction of promises?

And, of course, you can de-clutter and raise money online by selling pre-loved clothes, unwanted gifts or out-grown toys to give them a new life elsewhere!

Sponsorship and celebrations

If you're thinking of taking on a physical challenge to support refugees, check our our Challenge Event page for a range of options and advice.

But, of course, not every sponsored activity involves sportwear... or even going outdoors! Could you complete a sponsored silence, head shave or tech detox? How about a knit-a-thon, read-a-thon, or getting sponsored to learn a new skill?

Alternatively, you could turn a moment of celebration into an opportunity to benefit others. It's easy to create an online fundraiser and ask for donations instead of gifts for a birthday, anniversary, or even a wedding. We'd love to help you mark your day in this special way.

Tips for fundraising success

  • Fundraising online? It’s easy to create a donation page on JustGiving or another platform of your choice. We can help – just get in touch!
  • Share your fundraiser on social media. For example, use local Facebook groups to spread the word about physical events. We can provide information about our work or a quote about your event.
  • Use email or WhatsApp to tell your networks how they can sponsor you, attend your fundraiser, or take part online.
  • Flyers and posters can attract attention. We can help you create these – just remember to get permission to display them in venues or public places.
  • Contact your local press. A creative fundraiser or community event will often interest local papers and news websites, and we can help you with a press release.
  • Be aware of cultural considerations. For example, fundraising through sweepstakes or games of chance may be haram for Muslims, and asking your community for advice can help involve as many people as possible.
  • Can your donation be matched? Often, companies offer to make a donation when their employees fundraise for charity – sometimes matching every pound raised, or even more!
  • Thank your donors and keep them updated. If you’re fundraising through JustGiving, it’s easy to send progress emails and ask your donors to spread the word.
  • We can help create fundraising materials for your event, or provide you with logos and photos for publicity.
  • Remember to ask us for help, and please share the results of your fundraiser with us – we’d love to celebrate your efforts on social media!

Donating the funds you’ve raised

Firstly, thank you so much for raising money to help refugees build new lives. Every penny makes a difference.

If you’ve received sponsorship or contributions online, these will automatically be sent to Breaking Barriers by the fundraising platform you chose.

Alternatively, if you raised money in the ‘real world’, please use this form to make an equivalent donation online. You can then simply keep the cash you raised.

If you have any problems making a donation online, please contact us. And thank you so much, in advance, for the proceeds of your fantastic fundraiser!
