Refugees flee from war, persecution, and violence. With yet more hardship waiting in the UK. A new country. Frequently a new language. An unfamiliar work culture. Four times more likely to be unemployed.

Often, refugees face these challenges alone. That’s wrong, and it’s why Breaking Barriers exists. And now the brilliant band, Red Guitars, have released a brand new single to help refugees in the UK build new lives.

You’re warmly invited by Hallam Lewis, Matt Higgins, John Rowley and Lou Duffy-Howard to download ‘Ho Ho Hum’ for free, and make a donation to Breaking Barriers. We are so grateful for Red Guitars’ support, and we all hope you enjoy the song!

What does Breaking Barriers do?

Our expert advisors and volunteers offer support for refugees on everything from writing a first CV to preparing for that daunting job interview. From the subtleties of UK work culture to the different routes into a profession.

We also offer English language classes – from beginner to professional – and IT and digital skills training. Meanwhile, through our corporate partners, refugees can gain advice, paid work placements, and fulfilling job opportunities.

Our mission is to ensure every refugee can access employment that is meaningful for them. And, together, we’re working resolutely towards that goal.

Why this matters

Refugees living in the UK face many barriers to employment. From language differences to gaps in their CVs due to the lengthy asylum process. From a lack of UK work experience to non-recognition of their qualifications. From cultural differences to discrimination.

As a result, refugees in the UK are four times more likely to be unemployed than people born here, and on average earn about half the amount per week that UK nationals do. This is despite high levels of qualifications and skills.

But, research by Breaking Barriers shows that just 8 hours of our support could triple a refugee's chances of finding a job. Our advisors, volunteers and corporate partners really can help refugees begin to build a new life.

About Red Guitars

Red Guitars formed in the early 1980s, and quickly built a loyal following for their unique mix of infectious rock and African rhythms. Their debut single, 'Good Technology' was an instant hit, and was followed by consecutive No. 1s in the Independent Charts.

They also earned support from tastemaker titles, including cult Channel 4 TV show The Tube, the BBC's Whistle Test, and BBC Radio legend John Peel.

Fast forward to 2022 and 2023, and Red Guitars returned with two successful tours, and they're currently recording a new album.

Red Guitars' single, 'Ho Ho Hum', was released in December 2024 and is a moving, reflective observation on the struggles of migration for refugees. It's available to download for free, with the invitation to make a donation to Breaking Barriers to help refugees build a new life.
