Why your support matters
When Comfort and her 13-year-old daughter first arrived in the UK, they endured two nights on the streets, then stayed in a succession of overnight boarding houses and a hotel before finally moving into a place of their own.
At times, the struggle to start again in a new country was overwhelming. Comfort didn’t know how to talk to people. It was hard to get by financially. Sometimes it was only because of her daughter that she went outside to get food.
Even when she was finally granted refugee status, Comfort’s challenges continued. She’d previously run her own, successful business, supporting herself and providing employment for others. But, in the UK, she didn’t know where to start when looking for work.
A turning point came when she was introduced to Breaking Barriers. We always ask refugees what their employment goals are, and Comfort’s answer was clear: “I want to work in care.”
Be the difference
Thanks to Breaking Barriers supporters, Comfort received one-to-one advice to help her apply for jobs in the care sector. We guided her through preparing a CV and covering letters, practicing interview skills, and learning about the job market.
Now, Comfort has a job she loves, as a support worker for autistic children. And Breaking Barriers remains on hand as she continues to build her new life in the UK:
“People came to my aid. People supported me. People helped me. I want to give back and share the love that people have shown me. Supporting, caring for, and helping people gives me so much joy, especially when I can see the joy in their face too.”
Your gift could be the difference for a refugee like Comfort. The difference between an uncertain future in an unfamiliar country, and finding meaningful employment, purpose, and joy.
