I'm a big fan of Linkedin for professional networking. I keep my profile up to date, and often reach out 'cold' to people from whom I could learn. As you are a creative, sharing some work you're proud of on social media could drive traffic to you, supporting you as you build a network. With regards 'style' - the universal elements include being respectful of people's time, clear (and realistic) with what you're asking, and polite. Many people on LinkedIn adhere to open-networking, so it's not difficult to establish a solid base on which you can build. I'm always happy to introduce connections to each other.
