Andrew’s story
From job market uncertainty to a meaningful career in housing management, Andrew shares his journey in his own words, showing how far the right support can go.
Andrew first got involved with Breaking Barriers in 2019, seeking support to navigate the challenges of building a career after arriving in the UK. Since then, he’s rebuilt his confidence, gained valuable work experience, and ultimately secured a fulfilling role in housing management. As a proud member of our alumni community, we’re delighted that Andrew has shared his journey by answering 10 questions as part of our Breaking Barriers, Building Futures campaign.
1. Where are you originally from and when did you first come to the UK?
I am originally from Nigeria where same sex relationships are illegal and attract a 14-year prison sentence. Even though Nigeria is my birth country, I always felt like an outcast because of my sexuality. As a result, I applied for asylum in the UK in 2016 based on these grounds.
2. What challenges did you face as a refugee?
Finding a fulfilling job as a refugee in the UK was challenging. I was looking for a role that matched my education and was in line with my long-term goal. All the interviews I attended were unsuccessful which had a negative impact on my confidence. I lost all hope of finding a fulfilling job. Some of the contributing factors were:
- Gap in employment which can be viewed negatively by employers.
- Lack of confidence due to the lack of familiarity with the UK job market.
- Lack of work references.
3. How did you first learn about Breaking Barriers?
During my asylum process, I was supported by an organisation called “Say it Loud Club”, an organisation that provides support and advocacy for LGBTQA+ refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. A staff member from Breaking Barriers, Ray Shami from Breaking Barriers, came to one of our monthly meetings and spoke of the amazing work that they do. I asked “Say it Loud Club” to refer me, and that’s how I came to gain support from Breaking Barriers.
4. Tell us about the support you got from Breaking Barriers.
Breaking Barriers organised interview technique and CV workshops, which included 1-2-1 sessions. In addition, mock interviews were also organised prior to my upcoming interviews, which helped boost my confidence and made me feel better prepared. With Breaking Barriers, it isn’t just about helping clients create a fancy CV and letting them off into the scary job market, it is a continuous process of support and guidance until you get suitable employment.
5. What skills and opportunities did you gain through Breaking Barriers?
Through Breaking Barriers I was able to interview for a six-month work experience placement at Ipsos, an opportunity that provided me with valuable experience to help me achieve my long-term goal. My confidence improved, I developed skills to tailor my CV to the roles I was applying for and, most importantly, the job market did not look that scary anymore.
6. How important was Breaking Barriers’ support in helping you gain meaningful employment?
Breaking Barriers played a crucial role in helping me secure meaningful employment. By linking me with an organisation who actively recruits refugees, I was provided with support in areas where I faced systematic barriers, they helped me in accessing fair opportunities and integrate into the workforce.
7. Where are you working now and what do you do?
I currently work in housing management for Notting Hill Genesis Housing Association.
8. What does meaningful employment mean to you and why is it so important?
For me, meaningful employment is not just about having a job, it is about employment that should provide stability, dignity, purpose and growth. Meaningful employment helps you regain economic independence rather than relying on government or charity support. Other important aspects I would highlight are:
- Improved mental health and wellbeing.
- Social inclusion.
- The satisfaction of contributing to the society I am now part of.
9. How has your life changed since receiving support from Breaking Barriers?
With the support of Breaking Barriers, I have been able to achieve financial stability and independence, which brings a sense of self-sufficiency. Moreover, I can now afford better housing, and I have an improved quality of life. I feel valued and respected for my skills and contributions. Finally, my social integration and confidence has improved. Building new relationships in the workplace helped my cultural integration and improved my language skills.
10. What are your goals for the future?
My goal is to use my experience as a refugee in the UK to inspire and support other refugees, helping them integrate more smoothly and confidently into society.
Without the support of organisations such as Breaking Barriers, many refugees would be stuck in low-paid, insecure jobs, which are likely to be below their skill level. Support networks help unlock refugees’ full potential, benefitting both individuals and the economy.
