About It Depends on What Direction You Look In
In 2019, Migrate Art founder Simon Butler visited refugee camps in Iraqi Kurdistan.
The region had faced devastating fires, attributed to organised militia groups who were using them as an intimidation tactic. The fires had destroyed hundreds of thousands of acres of crops, causing food insecurity and financial hardship.
Shocked by this destruction, Simon collected ash from the scorched Kurdish land and brought it back to London, where it was turned into paint. Then, in one of Migrate Art’s earliest collaborative projects, the paint was distributed to acclaimed artists to create new works that would benefit refugee charities.
One artist who participated in the Scorched Earth project was Jules de Balincourt, who used the ash paint to create the dramatic and moving ‘It Depends on What Direction You Look In’.
The original painting was auctioned to raise funds for Migrate Art’s charity partners, and 50 signed prints were also produced.
