About House
In 2016 the Calais Jungle, once home to 10,000 refugees, was demolished. Amid the debris of destroyed shelters and scattered belongings, Migrate Art founder, Simon Butler, came across a pile of broken crayons and colouring pencils. Remnants of a school that had stood there.
Having previously volunteered in the camp, the scene struck Simon deeply. He collected the pencils and crayons and brought them back to London, where he invited leading artists to create new works with them.
Rachel Whiteread not only used, but embedded, these broken pencils in her creation for this project: ‘House’.
Whiteread’s original artwork was auctioned to raise funds for Migrate Art’s charity partners. Seventy-five signed prints were also produced, allowing more people to own a remarkable piece of art that speaks to home, memory, and what is left behind.
