Tackling Digital Exclusion
Many refugees in the UK face digital exclusion, which impedes their job search and skills-building efforts. Breaking Barriers and Screen Share UK are tackling this challenge head-on.
Arriving in the UK, people from a refugee background often find themselves facing a significant barrier – digital exclusion. This is mainly because they do not have access to the right equipment, which then impacts their employability skills and ability to search for and apply for jobs.
Our team at Breaking Barriers is committed to breaking down barriers to employment and empowering our clients to achieve their goals. In an increasingly digital world, a crucial aspect of this is providing access to technology. Each device is a tool for change.
While we work hard to provide support, we’ve recognised our limited capacity to fix old or donated devices and efficiently get them to our clients.
This is where our wonderful partner, Screen Share, comes in. Screen Share, a remarkable organisation with a shared mission and sustainable solution to enhance digital inclusion for people from refugee backgrounds, brings invaluable expertise to the table. Through this partnership, we combine our strengths to make a significant, life-changing impact on our clients.
How it works:
- Device Donations: Anyone supporting our mission donates laptops they don’t need directly to Screen Share.
- Device Refurbishment: Screen Share securely wipes, repairs and refurbishes these devices to ensure they are in optimal condition.
- Client Referrals: We directly refer clients who need laptops to Screen Share every month.
- Direct Delivery: Clients across the country then have their device delivered to them with a one-year guarantee!
This streamlined approach has significantly increased the number of laptops available to our clients, enabling them to access essential online resources, search for jobs, and develop the digital skills needed to access meaningful employment.
We are so grateful to our partners, including Marshmallow, and organisations like Identity Global, whose generous donations have supported this initiative. Thanks to their contributions, we’ve made substantial progress in reducing the waiting list for our clients – meaning more refugees benefit from digital inclusion.
