English Teacher Volunteer

The Role

Language skills are a significant barrier for many of our clients. The BB English Programme provides free English courses to refugees, focused on work-related language skills. You can volunteer as a teacher, teaching assistant or on curriculum development.

  • Courses include pre-beginner, Business English, Writing Skills, IELTs and English at work
  • Class sizes are small, around 8-10 students
  • We can provide curriculum outlines, though this will often need to be adapted to suit students' needs
  • TEFL/CELTA or teaching degree;
  • Courses take place in central and east London
  • Courses take place on weekday evenings or Saturday mornings
  • Classes are usually 2 hours long and courses last between 6 – 10 weeks
  • We ask volunteers to commit to at least two courses. Depending on experience, volunteers can start as a teaching assistant before leading their own course.
  • Curriculum development: we are always looking for volunteers to help develop and write our courses
  • This role allows us to launch and deliver a wider range of courses
  • Provide refugees with life-changing skills, supporting them to integrate into their communities and find work
  • Gain experience delivering English language courses, including IELTs, at a range of levels
  • Take ownership of your own course, with the opportunity of writing your own curriculum and developing new courses
  • Meet other like-minded volunteers
  • Support, curriculum and guidance provided by Breaking Barriers where needed
