Breaking Barriers is the brainchild of founder Matthew Powell who realised, while doing a Master’s degree in international development at the London School of Economics, how little support was available to help refugees integrate into society once they had been granted asylum status. He was convinced that business had an important role to play and started by persuading a number of prominent London employers to offer work experience. At the same time, he reached out into refugee communities and found great demand for this experience alongside advice, training and English language tuition. He has recently been recognised by Forbes 30 under 30 as one of Europe’s leading social entrepreneurs for his sustainable, scalable and business-led response to the refugee crisis.
"I'm lucky enough to have the best job in the world. I work with an incredibly talented team, to support an equally as talented group to integrate into a society that they are so desperate to be a part of. Thanks to our amazing network of volunteers, donors and corporate partners - who are equally passionate about this cause - for contributing to making our communities more cohesive and prosperous for the benefit of all."
