Who we are

At just 21, Joel stood up for LGBTQIA+ rights by holding the first ever Pride in Nigeria. But, afterwards, he had to flee or risk the death penalty.

Breaking Barriers is a specialist charity that offers refugees, like Joel, support to rebuild their lives. By joining us with a monthly gift, you’ll be part of a bold, ambitious, vital mission: To ensure every refugee can access meaningful employment.

Why we exist

Refugees flee from war, persecution, and violence. With yet more hardship waiting in the UK. A new country. Frequently a new language. An unfamiliar work culture. Four times more likely to be unemployed.

Often, refugees face these challenges alone. That’s wrong, and it’s why Breaking Barriers exists. In just eight years, we’ve grown from a spark of an idea to a team working in five cities, supporting over 1,100 refugees a year.

But one thing is missing. You.

  • £25 a month – Could help fund language classes for talented, skilled refugees who’ve never spoken English before
  • £50 a month – Could help fund a Breaking Barriers advisor, to give refugees one-to-one support throughout their journey towards meaningful employment
  • £100 a month – Could help support refugees into paid placements with our corporate partners that break down the practical and cultural barriers to work

Rebuilding lives

Joel’s drive and talent secured him a place on a course at Oxford University. He continues his activism work. But thousands of refugees still need guidance to help their true potential shine through.

If you believe everyone deserves a fair chance, join Breaking Barriers today. You can help refugees like Joel rebuild their lives and make the world a better place.
