Daryna came to Breaking Barriers because she wanted to apply to study Game Design at university. We helped her review her personal statement and fill in her UCAS application, reviewed her scholarship application, and helped her get an ENIC comparability statement through our partnership with City & Guilds. She’s received several offers and will be studying a BSC in creative computing at Goldsmiths University.
It was very scary for me to apply for jobs or projects, since it meant meeting new people and being in a new environment.
My name is Daryna. I am 19 years old, and I am from Ukraine. I like to call myself a student though I dropped out of my old university and I am now applying to a new one. Since I have time on my hands, I decided to find a job or to volunteer. It was very scary for me to apply for jobs or projects, since it meant meeting new people and being in a new environment.
Thankfully someone I know contacted me and said that they are looking for a translator for their humanitarian project. It was about psychological help for people in crisis. In this case, it was for people from de-occupied villages in the region where I live.
The person I was translating for is someone I know. We met in a friendly atmosphere some time ago, so I decided it’s perfect and went for it. The program consisted of a short training course and then work in the field for people who participated.
I was so afraid that there were going to be a lot of people, that I would do something wrong and embarrass myself.
I saw how helpful all the work was, and I was happy that I was able to participate in such an important project.
But when the training started, it turned out to be wonderful, the number of people was small, so the pressure was not so high. And when I made mistakes or forgot how to translate a word correctly people supported me. After that, when we worked in the field, I saw how helpful all the work was, and I was happy that I was able to participate in such an important project.
Now I write a message for you. If you are so scared like me to do something, do it anyway. Just do it without fear. I promise that everything will be okay.
And, if you’re not scared, I am happy for you, and a little bit jealous!
And now that I am looking for a new job. Good luck to us both!
