Renee has been volunteering with Breaking Barriers on our Education programme as an English teacher. Education volunteers support us with planning, preparing and delivering classes, including employment-focused English courses from pre-beginner to advanced, IELTS preparation, general conversation and IT and digital skills courses.

Renee joined Breaking Barriers in October 2020 and has delivered a huge 37 English classes! Renee’s help has been vital in ensuring our refugee clients receive the English support they need to integrate in the UK.

Here is what Renee had to say about volunteering:

“I have been lucky to live in several countries and work in varied industries and it was while I was living in Riyadh that my interest in teaching English was piqued.  After completing my CELTA certification, I was looking for an opportunity to help others and found Breaking Barriers. I have had the experience of moving to unfamiliar places and can understand, albeit in a very small way comparatively, how it must feel to be unfamiliar with a language.”

“I have taught Beginner, Intermediate, Conversation and 1 to 1 classes at Breaking Barriers.  I enjoy the variety and I am continuously amazed at the spirit in which the students come to class. Even in an online environment, the interest, warmth, and intelligence of the students shines through. Honestly, they teach me as much as I teach them.”

Thank you Renee for everything you’ve done for Breaking Barriers!
