My name is Rachel Engel and I’m an Associate Director and Regional Head of the Macquarie Group Foundation, EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), the philanthropic arm of Macquarie Group.
My question is: What one thing would you say to me if you could?
As a large employer you could let the government know that you would be happy to employ asylum seekers while they wait for a decision about their asylum claims (for months and sometimes years), provided the government changed the current rules to allow them to work.
If I could say one thing, it’d be that people in the UK often undermine experience coming from Africa, everything you have done is back to zero and it’s not fair. They don’t even give you the chance to show what you’re capable of, although you should be given the chance to adapt yourself because you’re in a new place.
